Shohei Ohtani ( 大谷 翔平, Ōtani Shōhei ), born on July 5, 1994, and famously known as "Shotime," is a Japanese professional baseball player. Currently, he serves as a pitcher and designated hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB). Ohtani has previously played for the Los Angeles Angels in MLB and the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
His extraordinary contributions both as a hitter and a pitcher, a rarity among two-way players, position Ohtani's peak performance as widely regarded among the greatest in baseball history. Some even draw favorable comparisons to the early career of the legendary Babe Ruth.
